TONIGHT: Event to support rail in America, young people riding trains, and ‘little bets’

C’mon guys. Trains are awesome.

Are you interested in creative solutions to transportation issues? Would you rather take a nap instead of driving through Kansas on road trips? DO YOU LIKE TRAINS?

Well, then do I have an event for you. Join Unemployed Kat and me tonight to celebrate the opening of applications for the Millennial Trains Project, along with the launch of BLK SHP Innovation’s DC outpost.

Here are the quick hits:

TONIGHT, April 25, 2013, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Veracruz Gallery and Bar, at the corner of 9th St and Vermont Ave NW (map it)

Dinner (for purchase from El Foridano), drinks (for purchase from the Veracruz bar menu), music (by DC-based Jonny Grave), and speeches from innovators at BLK SHP and MTP. Learn more about BLK SHP’s new office in DC, along with what you need to do to apply for the Millennial Trains Project.

How to get there:

The 90 and 92 buses stop right at the 9th and U St NW intersection. The U St/Cardozo Metro station, on the Green-Yellow Line, is right across the street. SideCar DC will also provide free rides to and from the event.

The Millennial Trains Project (MTP) funds a group of millennials each year to embark on a journey by rail, which hits 10 cities in 10 days. The itinerary includes briefings from mentors while on the train, engaging with local leaders at stops off the train, and five or six hours in each city to pursue an independent project.  You just have to be a millennial to qualify, but the application process is competitive.

BLK SHP (pronounced ‘Black Sheep’) is an consulting firm that employs their own ‘little bets’ approach to consulting. This micro-level trial and error methodology has been recognized by The Economist and Financial Times for its affordability and practicality among firms large and small. Peter Sims and COL Casey Haskins (retired) will on hand to discuss ‘little bets’, agile innovation, and what it takes to shake things up in the business world.

Hope to see you tonight!
